Hirshberg: To bring into the perspective of today, ultimately organic is truly preventative healthcare. Kwittken: Like you said, this is something that you’ve been advocating for a while, because this is a daisy-chain effect on health. My opinion is, wherever food is sold, organic should be there. A hell of a lot of Americans can only afford to buy food from places like Walmart. But the reason we did it is because we never set out to be food for the elite. And I took an enormous amount of grief from the left on that for selling out to a big bad company. Stonyfield was actually the first organic company to ever sell to Walmart. With scale, we can keep paying the farmer the proper price, but get the cost more in line to something that’s affordable. Producing organic food is about sequestering carbon and animal health, including humans. With scale, we’re bringing that cost down. Kwittken: You mentioned this is now a $60 billion industry – do you think that, one day, the cost of organic goods will be more accessible to people who have financial insecurity? And it’s vindicating to see a younger generation come along who have gotten the memo, and they know we have to change things. To be more positive, I’m deeply proud of the organic industry that, when Samuel and I started Stonyfield, didn’t exist.
And we have this myth that the earth is our subsidiary, that it’s there for the taking and the dumping, when in fact everything that’s ever been made possible over the course of human evolution has been because of a bountiful earth. We aren’t just damaging the planet-we’re damaging ourselves. And I do feel incredibly frustrated by the slow progress.
I do feel vindicated that ecology and sustainability have become major company values. Hirshberg: I’ll pick ‘D’ for all of the above.
Do you feel frustrated that people are caring about this only now, or are you hopeful now that we’re talking about it? Kwittken: You were one of the first among us to emphasize the importance of ecological and environmental sustainability, but today it’s become much more popular.
